Peace Centre Hosts Rethinking Radicalisation Conference

Issues of radicalisation and violent extremism in the UK today will be addressed at a forthcoming two day conference, ‘Rethinking Radicalisation’ organised by the Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Foundation for Peace, to be held on 11th and 12th October at the Peace Centre in Warrington, home of the Foundation.

Responding to the government’s recent review of its Prevent strategy, the Foundation has put together a programme of eminent speakers including Professor Ted Cantle, Executive Chair, Institute of Community Cohesion,  Dr Robert Lambert, Co-director at the European Muslim Research Centre at the University of Exeter and Haras Rafiq, Director of Centri .

Exploring why people become radicalized will be former members of extreme organizations such as the Irish National Liberation Army, the Ulster Volunteer Force and Hizb ut-Tahrir, the global Islamic political organization. Also explored is the rise of far right extremism in the UK. Discussions will also focus on recent tragic events in Norway and the rise of the English Defense League.

Day two of the conference will look at ways in which the Foundation works with the Prevent and community cohesion agendas through case studies and workshops.

Foundation for Peace Chief Executive, Clare White said: ‘We are delighted to be able to host this two day conference which will bring together some of the country’s leading experts in the fields of conflict resolution and community cohesion. It will offer a valuable opportunity to examine how far we have come in understanding and addressing radicalisation within the UK. Our intention is to break open the debate and look at how we can best respond to these challenging issues’.
