Jonathan Ball tiny steps for Peace

This diversity and social inclusion programme has been designed to increase mutual understanding, encourage tolerance, friendships and acceptance of all others as equals regardless of individual differences.

Aimed primarily at 5-7 year olds this programme focuses on identifying similarities and differences between children, highlighting the fact that everyone has positive qualities to offer and should be treated equally. This encourages the children to react positively to diversity and to be more accepting and tolerant of others.

It aims to reduce the level of aggression, bullying and violence in the playground, classroom and wider community leading to greater socialisation and development opportunities for children.

Run in schools, the programme includes a play followed by workshops delivered by Foundation staff. The Foundation has also developed a teacher resource pack and accompanying resources for use in “circle time”, offering up to 10 weeks activities which reinforce the programmes key messages.

“As a teacher I think it gave me an opportunity to learn more about how to resolve conflict in a very easy way; how to encourage children to develop relationships and friendships in a very peaceful way.” - Teacher

“They [the children] are beginning to share activities and there has been a reduction in the number of problems at playtime.” - Teacher

“We’ve learned that we’re not the only ones that are special. We are all special.” - 6 year old girl
